You can connect external speakers to your LG smart TV using:
- Bluetooth connection
- Analog audio output
- digital optical audio output
- HDMI
Though LG TVs have built-in speakers the sound quality is not up to the mark. People prefer high-quality audio for different reasons. Some like to connect sound system for watching movies to have a theatre experience at home. While others usually like to listen to music at high volume.
How To Connect External Speakers To LG TV
Analog Audio Output
Analog, RCA, and Aux (3.5 mm) outputs are usually compatible with old LG TV models. If you are using the old model of LG TV and buying any external audio system for it, check if it has analog audio outputs; otherwise, it won’t connect to your LG TV.
You cannot directly plug your speakers into RCA outputs. Instead, you will need a home theatre receiver or an amplifier for producing sound. Alternatively, you can use powered speakers or soundbars that have built-in amplifiers.
Follow these easy steps to connect external speakers to LG TV using analog audio output:
- Connect RCA cable to the analog audio output of LG TV.
- Connect the other end of the cable to the analog audio input of the sound system, speaker, stereo receiver, soundbar, or home theatre.
- Turn on the audio device.
- Use the manual to set up LG TV audio settings.
- Choose ‘Audio Out (Optical/HDMI ARC)’. (Setup settings are different for every LG TV model, we recommend checking the manual for settings.)
- To hear the sound, select the input on your audio device to which the LG TV is connected
- Check if the audio device has any sound enhancement settings, such as DTS Neo: 6 or Dolby Prologic II, for an immersive sound experience.
However, RCA connections and LG TV aux input are not available in the new LG TV models.
Digital Optical Audio Outputs
You cannot connect RCA to LG smart TV (in new models); instead, they have digital optical audio outputs or HDMI (ARC) ports for better sound quality. To use digital optical audio outputs for connecting the speakers to LG TV, make sure to use an optical plug that is square and transparent instead of the standard coaxial plug, which is not compatible with most LG TVs.
Follow these steps for a seamless connection:
- Connect the digital optical cable with the LG TV optical digital audio output.
- Connect the other side of the cable to the digital optical audio outputs of your powered speakers, stereo receivers, home theatre, or soundbar.
- Use the manual to set up LG TV audio settings.
- Choose ‘Audio Out (Optical/HDMI ARC)’. (Setup settings are different for every LG TV model, we recommend checking the manual for settings.)
- Enable SIMPLINK to play HD audio with the help of HDMI ARC. Select Digital Optical Audio Outputs as the source.
If the external audio system is not working, go to LG TV audio settings and choose ‘PCM’ options. It happens because few devices are not compatible with DTC or Dolby Digital.
For connecting the digital optical cable with LG TV audio output, find the LG TV audio output jack location at the back of the LG TV for connections.
Bluetooth Connectivity
Using Bluetooth devices or soundbars compatible with LG sound sync to connect speakers to LG TV has become increasingly popular. It does not require any cables because of wireless Bluetooth connectivity. However, not all LG models have this high-end feature.
Follow these quick steps to connect audio system through Bluetooth:
- Switch on your LG TV and audio system
- Go to the setup menu and pair the device
- Choose ‘LG Sound Sync’ as the default audio settings
HDMI (ARC) Connectivity
HDMI (ARC) is a good option for connecting music system to LG TV because of its higher quality audio-video signals. You need an HDMI cable to connect the two devices (speakers and LG TV). Ensure both the devices are ARC compatible and HDMI format is activated in both the devices.
Check if your LG TV has the label ‘HDMI ARC’; it means it functions as both – input and output.
- Find the HDMI (ARC) port on your LG TV and connect the cable.
- Connect the other side of the cable to HDMI (ARC) port/inputs of your sound system, speaker, stereo receiver, home theatre device, etc.
- Use the manual to set up LG TV audio settings. Choose ‘Audio Out (Optical/HDMI ARC)’. (Setup settings are different for every LG TV model, we recommend checking the manual for settings.)
- Enable SIMPLINK to play high-resolution audio with the help of HDMI ARC. Select HDMI output as the source.
