How To Set Roku TV Sleep Timer [4 Methods]

Roku smart TV now include a Sleep Timer feature, which was previously missing. With this, you can schedule your smart TV to power off after a certain amount of time. Here’s how to enable sleep timer.

To set up a sleep timer on your Roku, go to TV Home screen and select Settings. Navigate to System and select Time. Click on Sleep Timer and choose a time interval after which you want your TV to turn off.

How To Set Roku Sleep Timer

If you want to set a sleep timer on your Roku TV before playing a program, you can do it in two ways.

Navigate Settings

  • On your Roku remote, press the ‘Home’ button
  • Select ‘Settings’ -> ‘System’ -> ‘Time’ -> ‘Sleep timer
  • Choose the time interval of your choice

Note: You can modify the existing sleep time interval by following the same method.

Use the Shortcut Tile

There is an even more convenient way to set up a sleep timer on your Roku TV. On the Roku home screen, there is a tile at the bottom of the channel grid. It is the ‘Sleep time’ shortcut tile.

  • Press the ‘Home’ button on your Roku remote
  • Move right to open the channel grid
  • Scroll down to locate the ‘Sleep Timer’ shortcut icon
  • Select the tile and follow the on-screen instructions for setting up the interval time.

Note: Ensure the shortcut tile has not been hidden in the ‘Settings’ menu to avail this feature.

Setting Up Sleep Timer While Streaming Content

You can also set up the sleep time while watching Live TV, in the midst of streaming the content, or while viewing an external device.

Access the Options Menu

  • Press the ‘✶’ star button on your Roku remote
  • In the Options menu, select the Sleep timer and set the interval time as per your choice

Note: In some Roku TVs, ‘’ does not lead to the Options menu. So, you need to opt for another method in those models.

Use A Voice Command

There are two ways to use a voice command to activate the Sleep timer on your Roku TV – use a voice remote or Roku mobile app for iOS and Android.

  • On your Roku voice remote, press and hold the microphone button. Or, on your mobile phone, press the same icon on the Roku mobile app.
  • Now, use a voice command to set the sleep timer.
  • You can either specify the sleep time by saying, “Turn off TV in 20 minutes.”
  • You can also set the timer at a specific time by saying, “Turn off TV at 12 AM.”

Ro To Sleep App

A specific app that is designed primarily to set sleep timers on Roku TVs is the ‘Ro to Sleep’ app. However, it is available only on the Apple App Store and not on Google Play Store.

  • Download and install the ‘Ro to Sleep’ app on your iOS phone, iPad, or iPod.
  • From the ‘List of Devices’ that your iOS device will automatically detect, select your Roku TV
  • You can set up the sleep timer without any cost for up to three times. For unlimited timers, you must purchase the plan.

Note: The Ro to Sleep app has a specific sleep timer button, whereas on the Roku mobile app you can either set the timer with your voice command or by navigating the settings.

Can I Set My Roku Stick, Roku Express And Roku Ultra To Turn Off Automatically?

Roku streaming devices don’t have the sleep timer feature in them. Moreover, if you set your TV to turn off automatically after a specified time, the TV will sleep, but the attached Roku stick will continue streaming.

Roku Express

By navigating the settings, we can make the Roku Express 4k+ stop streaming, but it won’t turn off.

  • Go to ‘Settings
  • Scroll down to ‘System
  • Click on ‘Power
  • Select ‘Auto Power Savings
  • You will see the option, ‘Turn off the Roku Express after 20 minutes’. Check the box to stop the device after the specified time.

Roku Ultra

Like other Roku set-top boxes and sticks, Roku Ultra also doesn’t have a sleep timer feature. However, the following are some methods to overcome this issue.

Turn on the Bandwidth Saver

  • Go to ‘Settings
  • Click on ‘Network
  • Select ‘Bandwidth Saver
  • Turn it ‘On’. It will automatically turn the device off if you don’t use the remote for 4 hours.

Get a Smart Surge Protector

By plugging your TV and Roku Ultra into the timed outlets of a Smart Surge Protector with a timer, you can set a sleep timer on your streaming device.

Roku Streaming Stick

  • You can use the Ro to Sleep app to turn your Roku stick off after a specified time.
  • Also, you can check if the ‘✶’ star button option works on your device and open the ‘Options’ menu to enable a sleep timer.
  • 4 hours of inactive Roku remote turns the streaming stick off and returns you to the home screen. An activated Sleep timer on your TV will turn the TV off, too.

Can I Set My Roku TV To Turn Off At A Certain Time?

Yes, you can set a time of your choice to automatically turn your Roku TV off. By navigating Settings, you can enable the Sleep timer and adjust the time interval.

The minimum time interval starts from 30 minutes and it goes like 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hours, up to 3 hours. If you want to set the time for more than 3 hours, you can use the voice command through your Roku voice remote or the Roku mobile app.

Final Thoughts

Roku streaming devices don’t have in-built sleep timer options like the Roku TVs. However, we have mentioned some tested and useful workarounds that will turn the devices off automatically. Try the methods and give your feedback.
